KATSEYE Put a “PINKY UP” to the Norm in their New Single

You know when you are at a concert, and the performer yells, “Hands up!’ to get the crowd hype? Well, KATSEYE is trading hands for pinkies with their new single.

The global girl group released their dance-pop anthem “PINKY UP” on April 9th. KATSEYE is known for breaking boundaries and challenging self-expression within the industry, and this song continues to do just that. The new single follows their January release, “Internet Girl,” which shares similarities in terms of lyrical maturity.

PINKY UP” brings playful, messy fun to a luxurious theme. The song trades stereotypical elegance and royalty for identity, real confidence, and expression, singing, “No one can touch us if they tried, oh but it's a state of mind.” “Pinky up” may be seen as a way of telling others off. Instead of giving the middle finger, the girls put their pinkies up, a way to show class yet stand on business and be bold. Just as a cat's eye stone does, KATSEYE disregards negative energy and channels poise and tenacity throughout the tune.

In the music video, the girls transform a tea party into a rager. With Megan singing “One day, soon, the world's gonna end”, the quiet and tame energy of the historical gathering turns to modern, loud, and eccentric; KATSEYE creates a new world where tea cups are replaced by stuffed animals, while having fun and being authentic does not grant disrespect.

While paying homage to historical figures and events (including The Mona Lisa, Socrates, and the Louvre), the girls initiate their own form of history throughout the music video and within the song.

Yoonchae sings “I kinda know nothing, just like Socrates”, referencing the philosopher’s famous quote “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing”.

This challenges the notion that some people, particularly those well-known and of status, have a higher intellect and understanding than others. The quote being incorporated into the lyrics expands on the song’s theme. Everyone has a voice, and not everything has to be prestigious to be recognized and purposeful.

The girl group will continue “Screaming from cloud nine” as they take on Coachella Valley for the first time on April 10th, just one day after the release of their new single. The girls will also be performing on April 17th during the second week of the music festival.
