Winona Fighter cleaned up good at Subterranean in Chicago

Winona Fighter ate and left no crumbs.

Nashville pop-punkers Winona Fighter brought their “Yes, Chef” Tour to Chicago’s Subterranean last Thursday (July 17th) and - needless to say - fans were fed.

Fresh off the success of their debut album, “My Apologies To The Chef” (released through Rose Records just a this past February), the band exuded big, bombastic energy throughout the night as they tore through “My Apologies…” in full. And then some (Beastie Boys cover included).

As the Nashville natives marveled at the sold-out crowd, lead singer, Coco Kinnon, remarked how - so far this year alone - the band had been “touring for 1,000 days!” She also gave a gracious shoutout to the “coolest station in Chicago!” (aka Q101). Earlier that same day, Winona Fighter stopped by Chicago’s The Q101 Lounge to play a private event.

Never shy about dropping the f-bomb (and there were plenty throughout the night; definitely not a show for the kiddos), Kinnon exclaimed, “Chicago, this is so f***ing sick! Sold out f***ing show!” to a sea of young adults decked out in their best y2k emo attire.

It’s still not a phase, Mom!

Between pogoing from one side of the stage to the other (and asking the refrain, “Are you famous? Can we be friends?” on the band’s appropriately titled, “R U FAMOUS”), the band thanked fans for their support, stating, “We’re big fans of DIY. This album [“My Apologies To The Chef”] was recorded in our Nashville garage and no one touched [these tracks] except us”.

But wait, there’s more!

Winona Fighter then surprised fans by announcing a Deluxe Edition of “My Apologies…” would be arriving September 5th, bringing the total number of tracks to - as Kinnon put it - “32 f***ing songs!”

Occasionally, the band would turn the mic over to the crowd, singing, err -yelling, “Swear to God that I'm fine / Maybe I could feel better” on “Swear To God That I'm (FINE)”. Toward the end of the show, the band took on the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage”, with the band telling the audience, “Chicago, give it all you f***ing got!” as the night came to a close.

And they did.

*Note: You may have noticed that these photos look slightly different …my “fancy” camera just happened to malfunction on me that evening. I pivot and took these on my iPhone 13. The show must go on!
