Tate McRae surprises fans by releasing new single, “TIT FOR TAT”, mid-tour

Leave it to Tate McRae to drop a new banger out of nowhere. And in the middle of a world tour, no less.

McRae, who is currently embarking on her “Miss Possessive World Tour” (in support of her chart-topping third album, “SO CLOSE TO WHAT”), took to Instagram to announce her new single, writing, “TIT FOR TAT out Friday [September 26]…….surpriseeee”.

The track opens with a rousing chorus reminiscent of school girls chanting while skipping rope on the playground -rhythmically singing /talking, “Thought I might love you again, I'll see how I feel / Now that you're acting like that, boy, I never will. Last night, she answered my call, it sealed the deal”. The chorus then repeats as McRae’s breathy vocals sing over a beat reminiscent to “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals.

The track recalls how the Canadian singer /professional dancer believed that she’d found the guy of her dreams (“The day I met you, boy, I thought it was a blessing”) and she went to the end of the Earth to defend him (“In the heat of it, I always took your side”). The verse ends with  McRae quietly quipping, “Took our future off your plate”.

Rumored to be a diss track toward her former boyfriend, singer /rapper The Kid LAROI, McRae further elaborated via her Instagram Stories, “Wrote this song 2 weeks ago in Nashville on tour <3 finding inspiration everywhere I go”.

The song also serves as a possible single for the upcoming deluxe edition of McRae’s third album, “SO CLOSE TO WHAT”. Released on RCA Records (part of Sony Music Group), “TIT FOR TAT” was written by McRae along with [One Republic frontman] Ryan Tedder, Grant and [“Issues” singer /renowned songwriter] Julia Michaels. Production was handled by Tedder and Grant.

The pre-chorus explodes into Tetris-sounding “pings!” as the 22-year-old continues addressing her former lover, “Let’s go song, let’s go back to that. Let’s go tit for tat, boy, you asked for that…”

The bridge grabbed me, as the music seems to pull back just enough to highlight exactly how the Canadian-born singer is feeling, “That looks like it really hurts / That bruise on your ego. I know that it makes it worse / It had to be me, though”. The outro sees McRae getting the last laugh, simply dismissing “the other woman” and moving on without this mystery guy in her life (“Last night, she answered my call / I'm partying without you”).

Overall, typical dance/pop flair you’d expect from McRae at this point in her ever-rising career …after all, delivering bangers is what she does best! Here, she sounds more comfortable than ever.

Tate McRae announced her new single,“TIT FOR TAT”, via Instagram on Wednesday September 24th. The single dropped that Friday, September 26th.
