Sarah Kinsley channels 80s pop on new single, “Fleeting”
New York native, Sarah Kinsley, returns with a new, yet nostalgic-sounding bop. Awash in 80s-sounding synths, “Fleeting” reminds listeners that, “It’s not forever / it’s just a feeling”.
In an Instagram post, Kinsley describes “Fleeting” as, “A song for the existential epiphany you get when you cut your hair or the catharsis you reach in the back of a cab at midnight. A song to dance and flail your arms to. The answer is always fleeting”, followed by two angel wing emojis.
“A song to dance and flail your arms to”, indeed. The track immediately transports you back to the days of mall rats decked out in tube socks, neon scrunchies, big hair (courtesy of Aquanet) and Jane Fonda workouts -all while probably browsing your local Sam Goody. You need to pick up some new tapes for your boombox, after all. Can definitely picture this track as background music during a mall shopping spree scene in an 80s movie.
The lively music juxtaposed against its down trodden lyrics (“You wanna feel something / Anything to get the old thoughts away from you / You wanna breathe like you used to …But it’s not the weather, it’s not the pressure that makes you wanna drown / You’re lonely, can’t you tell?”) provide an interesting irony.
Like a frenzied shopping spree, the song gives you a (fittingly) “Fleeting” rush. An escape of sorts. Perhaps that was Kinsley’s intention all along?
