Mae Muller makes a splash on independently-released “My Island” EP
Mae Muller, best known for her collab with NEIKED x Polo G on 2021’s “Better Days”, has released her first body of work as an independent artist. An EP, titled “My Island”, was released July 18, 2025.
The 28-year-old was previously signed to the UK division of Capitol Records (part of Universal Music Group), but parted ways with the label (as well as her management) approximately late 2023-early 2024 after five years at the label. The London native explained she left due to feeling pressure to only create hits. “[I] lost sight of what [I] was doing [this music career] for”, she told “Daily Mail UK”. “[I] lost my identity and passion for music”.
Putting her major label days behind her, the British singer now retains authenticity and artistic creativity over her work. Available on digital download and streaming formats, “My Island” is a perfect reintroduction for Muller!
The first track, the title track, sounds like a mashup of Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” and Jessica Simpson’s “With You”. Here, Muller recalls how she, “Felt so lost, I couldn't win / Found my freedom, take it, breathe it in”. As she puts the past behind her, she’s much happier, singing, “You can find me on my island / Lying here on my island. There's no one else invited on my island / Come like the waves, watch 'em ride in / I'm feeling so enlightened on my island”. It’s just Mae Muller, and Mae Muller alone. In her element.
“Hello Kitty”, the second track, dives right into party mode amid a prominent, thumping beat. “Let's move, everybody, let's move / Got a party in my pocket if you wanna come through, yeah” sings Muller, who sounds more in control than ever. “Ooh, now I'm back and I'm ready to play, oh, yeah”. She’s recharged and ready to go! Can’t ask for anything better than that!
Track three, “In My Head” (previously released as the EP’s second single), delves into the more serious topic of metal health. The London-based singer discusses how she “Got out of bed today, first time in days but I'm doing fine”. The universal feelings of insecurity and depression proliferate throughout the song. The musician over analyzes things in her life and is preoccupied with the thought of she’s either doing too much or not enough. She insists, “Been doing therapy but, honestly, I'm too self-aware”. In a melody that vaguely recalls Taylor Swift’s “I Hate It Here”, Muller cries in the chorus, “In my head, I hate it here / 3 A.M., I hate it here. I think too much, don't do enough, it's getting weird”.
“Touch Me City”, the fourth track, sounds as if it could’ve sat comfortably on an 80s soundtrack. With Muller seductively singing, “Touch me city / I can show you heaven there / Call me pretty / Kisses on me everywhere (Kisses on me everywhere)” over a mid-tempo beat. It’s as if time stopped (or - at least - has melted into slow motion) as she suggests, “Woah-oh, we can take it further, darling, I know”.
The final song, “Breakaway” (previously released as the EP’s lead single), is an ode to escapism over a frantic, restless beat. Not to be confused with the Kelly Clarkson song of the same name, it - like “In My Head” - sees the singer over analyzing (“I'm insecure sometimes, when I say sometimes / Any minute I feel I could cry / Nearly lost my mind, stayed up every night”). Though there are things she wishes that she could’ve said /could take back (not to mention things that she would’ve /could’ve /should’ve done), Muller knows that she can’t dwell on the past for too long. She has to, as the song title suggests, “Breakaway”.
A perfect EP closer, the British singer wants to enjoy life -wanting to be free of restraints (both mental and not). It sounds like a song you’d play on full blast flying down the highway -on the road to bigger, better things. Here’s to Mae Muller and her new adventures, wherever the road takes her as a newly-minted, independent artist.
