Madison Beer reveals her deepest secrets on new album, “locket”

Madison Beer returns with her latest album, “locket”, which dropped Friday January 16th. The album follows Beer’s two previous studio albums (2021’s “Life Support” and 2023’s “Silence Between Songs”) -all released through Epic Records (part of Sony Music Entertainment).

The album piques your interest right away with the intro., “locket theme”, sounding as if you’re mentally flipping through various memories /images at the speed of light. Madison begins, wondering aloud, “Did you miss me? I like to pretend you did”. She promises, “All our memories safe in my locket, I carry it”. Clocking in at 1:30, “locket theme” provides the perfect amount of time for Beer to lull you into her dreamscape, as her voice swelters at intro.’s end.

The hypnotic second track, “yes baby”, sees Beer commanding her audience to listen. And yes, ma’am, we hear you and we are seated! The song “angel wings” is a mid-tempo pop tune that veers into an interesting, funky dubstep breakdown toward song’s end. “for the night” paints a delicate, yet haunting, atmosphere as Beer sings of fleeting intimacy. On “bad enough”, Beer can’t shake a former lover. The pre-chorus, “…But it's not bad enough to let my baby go”, segues effortlessly into the chorus, “Go, go, go / It's not bad enough to let my baby go / Go, go, go / It's not bad enough to let him go”, as her voice soars into gorgeous longing.

The plucky (and ironically titled) “healthy habit” finds Beer constantly returning to a harmful situation /person even though she knows it’s unhealthy as she delicately repeats, “And I wonder if, and I wonder if / And I wonder if it's worth doing it again”. On track 7, “you’re still everything”, Beer faces the heartbreaking reality that her partner no longer cares for her, yet she continues to love and care for him deeply. “If we can't be together, then I'll just go back to sleep” Madison tells herself in the chorus, as if reassuring herself that she’ll wake from this terrible nightmare.

“bittersweet” is a refreshing play on words. On the bubbly and upbeat “complexity”, Beer cries out, “How can I expect you to want me / When you want nothing for yourself? How can I expect you to love me? / To love me, to love me” -the words echoing over a soft, pounding beat. Madison shares her deepest desires on the danceable slice of dark pop, “make you mine”. She assures her partner, “I wanna taste the crush, I wanna feel” -voice soaring into the night sky as Madison slides the word “feel”. “I wanna lay you down / I wanna string you out, I wanna make you mine”. The album concludes with “nothing at all”, as Beer - poised as an angel in the album’s photoshoot - seemingly crashes back down to Earth -realizing, “The higher you rise, the further that you fall / And soon, you’re left with nothin’ at all”.

“locket” is an intimate, mature album from Madison, whose angelic voice will lull you into the deepest sleep (in the best way possible).
