KATSEYE confidently return with bold new EP, “Beautiful Chaos”
KATSEYE return with their highly-anticipated second extended play, “Beautiful Chaos”. The project arrives about a year after the multicultural girl group released their debut EP, “SIS (Soft Is Strong)”.
Released through HYBE UMG (formerly known as Big Hit America) and Geffen Records (part of Universal Music Group), “Beautiful Chaos” spans five diverse tracks, covering numerous topics (wealth, jealousy and player boys -just to name a few).
Right out of the gate, “Beautiful Chaos” hits the ground running with the previously-released quirky lead single, the dubstep-esq. “Gnarly”. The Latin-influenced second track, the Charli XCX cowrite, “Gabriela”, follows the ladies as they scold a jealous woman who’s after their man. “Hands off of my fella!” the group sass at an unnamed foe as they tell her to back off.
The third song, “Gameboy”, takes a stab at player boys, while still remaining playful. Over fast-paced music a la playing Double Dutch, the KATSEYE ladies, consisting of six members: Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia and Yoonchae, have no time for games. “Blamin’ me, but I ain’t the problem” they sing in the pre-chorus and bridge.
Track four, “Mean Girls”, makes a slight pivot to more introspective lyrics, which focus on forgiveness. The girl group runs through a list of different girl “archetypes”, concluding each chorus with, “And, yes, God bless even the mean girls”. The fifth (and final) song, “M.I.A.”, sounds vaguely reminiscent to Zara Larsson’s recent single, “Pretty Ugly”, if KATSEYE’s track was slowed down a bit. I can definitely picture a mashup of these two tracks!
Aside from streaming services, “Beautiful Chaos” is available to purchase in various physical formats. Two separate CD versions (“Beautiful” Version and “Chaotic” Version) include different cover art and houses the CD in a unique photobook.
