Hilary Duff returns with “Mature” new single

Hey now! Hey now! Hilary Duff is what dreams are made of as she returns with a slinky - yet poignant - new single after a decade-long hiatus. Millennial prayers have been answered! The former Disney Channel darling just dropped a new song, “Mature”, and - needless to say - the track definitely lives up to its title. A song for the times, Duff reflects on a previous relationship with a partner known for dating younger women.

Underneath its bubblegum pop sheen, the track’s dark subject matter finds an older man enamored with a (presumably) underage girl, as Duff muses, “She’s me, I’m her in a different font / Just a few years younger, new haircut”. To drive the point home, she observes, “She looks / Like shе could be your daughter” in the chorus.

Making it clear she no longer panders to The House of Mouse crowd, Duff laments of this older man, “Going d*wn on her on your vintage rug / Bet she's so impressed by your Basquiat / And she thinks you’re deep in the ways you’re not”.

The song is, in Duff’s own words, per an interview with influencer Jake Shane, “I feel like it’s my [older] self talking to my younger self about an experience that we had and just reflecting on it”. Indeed, Duff is no stranger to being linked to older men. As millennials may recall, she “dated” (and I use that word sparingly) Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden in the mid-00s (mind you, Duff was just 16 while Madden was already 26). Madden has since gone on to marry designer /“The Simple Life” star (and daughter of music legend Lionel), Nicole Richie.

The music landscape - not to mention society - has changed drastically since the singer /actress’s last album. In a post-#MeToo world, “Mature” is the perfect song to relaunch Duff’s music career. At the time, no one batted an eye when Duff and Madden were together. “I can't put it on her, she's a sweet kid / But she's taking the bait like we all did,” Duff comments in the pre-chorus. Now we can all look back in eerie hindsight.

The track comes ten years after Duff’s last foray into music, 2015’s "Breathe In. Breathe Out." Her comeback also follows previous albums: 2007's "Dignity”, 2004's "Hilary Duff", 2003's "Metamorphosis”, and 2002’s “Santa Clause Lane”.

Written by Duff, Matthew Koma (Duff’s husband), Brian Phillips, and Madison Love, “Mature” was released via Sugarmouse, Inc. under exclusive license to Atlantic Records (part of Warner Music Group). The track serves as the lead single off Duff’s comeback album, which - at press time - is rumored to be titled “luck…. or something”. The former “Lizzie McGuire” star’s sixth studio album is tentatively scheduled for release in 2026.
